About us
Focused on professional development and training of journalists and media development activities in the broadest sense, ICEJ has been primarily involved in Croatia, but we spread our activities across the Eastern and Central Europe through workshops, courses, seminars and other forms of training organized by our education center in Opatija for journalists and media workers, and in recent years also for all those who have contacts with the media and the public in the broadest sense. Among the workshops that were organized by ICEJ an important place belongs to workshop aimed to establish an understanding between the media and different social groups, non-governmental organizations, national minorities and other similar associations, and these programs are often supported by local governments, state institutions, companies and other subjects. ICEJ has been dealing, and expects to continue in the same manner, with issues which vary from the ethical questions, such as biased and unbalanced reporting to computer based reporting and new media. As a non profit organization, ICEJ is welcomed by many international institutions as an excellent venue to deal with the complex questions as independent journalism continues to develop in the Eastern and Central Europe. Our workshops, meetings and conferences gather participants from all over the world. We cooperate with EU institutions through programs such as TEMPUS, etc. and our work is supported by many prominent international professional and other organizations, as well as educational institutions, and, of course, the Croatian Journalists' Association, as our founder. By now ICEJ has hosted more than 300 programs, with more than 8000 participants. Workshops, conferences and training have been dealing with different aspects of journalism and tackling relations between the media and certain social phenomena. In most of the cases, ICEJ itself acted as an organizer or provided certain organizational services to the organizer. Different international organizations or agencies, such as USIS, USAID, REUTERS and ICRC, etc. sponsored the seminars. With some of them, ICEJ established long term cooperation becoming a training center for the series of workshops in a certain field of journalism. In regard to this type of cooperation, let us mention The Thomson Foundation from Cardiff, The Department for International Development of the Government of the United Kingdom, BBC Training Trust, Council of Europe, Ecole Superior de Journalisme, Lille, France etc. In addition to regular activities, ICEJ has provided logistical support and services of public relations for a large number of different events, and published numerous books and publications.

The International Center for Education of Journalists in Opatija, Croatia, was founded in the summer of 1998 as a self-supporting, non-governmental and non-profit organization, supported by the Croatian Journalists Association and its publishing house Press Data, Open Society Institute and the Town of Opatija. Until the establishment of ICEJ in Croatia there was no organization that would deal with improvement of professional skills of journalists and journalism in general, and that was and remains the main objective of our activity.
